PlayStation VR2 – An Impressive Experience with Limitations

When Sony announced the PlayStation VR2 in early 2023, the hype was immense – and rightly so! But how does the VR headset perform in everyday use? After extensive usage, I would like to share my experiences, from impressive highlights to the weaknesses that tarnish the overall picture.

A Quantum Leap Over the PS VR

The PlayStation VR2 is a huge advancement over its predecessor. The OLED display with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye delivers sharp images, true blacks, and impressive contrasts. The comfort-focused design with its helmet-like structure is also well-executed, although the rubber seal may take some getting used to.

Connecting via USB-C cable to the PS5 is a breeze. Inside-out tracking eliminates the need for external cameras, and the new Sense controllers impress with precise tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback.

An Engaging Gaming Experience

Especially in Gran Turismo 7, the PS VR2 showcases its strengths. Combined with a steering wheel and additional gadgets like a “ButtKicker” for vibration feedback, the immersion is taken to a new level. Rain battles on the Nürburgring or laps in a Porsche are moments that will stay in your memory for a long time.

Games like Horizon Call of the Mountain also showcase the graphical capabilities of the PS VR2. While the PS5 is not a high-end PC gaming machine, the interplay of hardware and software delivers an impressive experience.

Weaknesses That Cannot Be Overlooked

Unfortunately, the excitement is marred by some weaknesses:

  • Controller Battery Life: After 2-3 hours, the controllers need to be plugged in – this can be particularly annoying during longer sessions.
  • Cable Binding: The USB-C cable restricts freedom of movement, which is less noticeable in seated games like racing simulations, but can be disruptive in more active games.
  • Software Selection: The game offerings are solid but limited. Many users had hoped for titles like Astro Bot, but Sony disappointed with rather modest support.

In Comparison: Meta Quest 3

Compared to the Meta Quest 3, the PS VR2 lags behind in several areas. The Quest 3 offers higher resolution, standalone functionality, and better mixed-reality integration – all wirelessly. This makes it more versatile and accessible for everyday use. In contrast, the PS VR2 is limited to the PS5, which makes it less flexible.

Conclusion: A Niche Product with Strengths and Weaknesses

The PlayStation VR2 is a technical masterpiece for VR enthusiasts who already own a PS5 and have a penchant for games like Gran Turismo 7. It offers an immersive experience that is hard to beat in its price range. However, the lack of breakthrough software support and the limitations of the cable make it less appealing in the long run – especially compared to more flexible systems like the Meta Quest 3.

For me personally, the PS VR2 is a highlight for special occasions, but it has lost its place in everyday life. Anyone looking for a versatile VR system should look elsewhere.

However, those who value high-quality VR experiences within a console ecosystem will have a great time with the PS VR2 – especially when diving into the virtual cockpit with games like Gran Turismo 7. With the PS VR2 now offered at a much more affordable price, the journey into the PlayStation VR universe has never been cheaper.

Summary of the Differences:

  • PS VR was a fundamental VR experience with an external camera for tracking and limited technical performance.
  • PS VR2 offers significant upgrades, including eye tracking, haptic feedback, and a higher resolution. However, it requires the PS5 as a base.
  • Meta Quest 3 is a standalone solution with powerful hardware and mixed reality features that supports both VR and AR applications. It is wireless but does not offer eye-tracking functionality like the PS VR2.

The choice depends on whether one opts for a PlayStation-bound VR experience or prefers a flexible standalone option.
